Eleven Bowling Green student-athletes have been named Distingushed Scholar-Athletes by the Mid-American Conference, following strong contributions in the field of competition during the fall and exemplary work in the classroom.
The conference's Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) vote for Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, who must have competed in at least 50 percent of their fall sport competitions and maintain a 3.50 grade point average or higher. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Among the 110 student-athletes named by the MAC across seven fall sports, BGSU redshirt senior cross country runner Rachel Walny was the only four-time honoree. Also named Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each of the past three years, Walny is a graduate student with a 3.66 grade point average in HMSLS.
Four of Bowling Green's 11 nominees hold a 4.0 grade point average. They include men's cross country runner Jonathan Voth, men's soccer student-athlete Chris Sullivan, women's soccer student-athlete Elisa Baeron, and football student-athlete Gabe Skrobot. Skrobot was the only football Distinguished Scholar-Athlete with a 4.0 GPA, while Sullivan was one of just three in men's soccer. Baeron was also one of three in women's soccer and Voth was one of four in men's cross country.
Baeron and volleyball's Kallie Seimet were named Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for the second time in their careers.
Among total honorees, men's cross country with tied for the most in the MAC with Miami, while women's soccer was tied for the most in the league with Western Michigan. Volleyball was tied for the third-most in the conference.
