Lourdes saw a pair of winning streaks come to an end on Friday evening, as the Gray Wolves suffered a 20-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23 loss to Marian inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center to begin Homecoming weekend on campus.
The loss snapped an 11-match overall win streak, and a 12-match home court win streak for the Gray Wolves, as Lourdes was defeated for just the third time ever inside the Ebeid Rec Center.
“Marian is a very good team,” head coach Greg Reitz said afterwards. “We played pretty well, but needed to be just a notch better to beat a team that is playing as well as they are. I thought we battled but it just wasn’t quite enough.”
Lourdes led the entire first set, scoring four of the match’s first five points. Leading 14-12, the Gray Wolves went on a 7-2 run to pull away, putting down 17 kills and hitting .277 in the stanza.
The Gray Wolves led 14-9 in the second set before an 8-2 run by the Knights flipped the score. Marian was able to record back-to-back kills late to break a 23-23 deadlock, as the Knights forced nine attack errors in the set by Lourdes.
Set three saw 20 ties and 10 lead changes. Lourdes had two two-point leads in the set at 12-10 and 13-11 before Marian took a 22-20 advantage. The Knights recorded 17 kills and hit .250 while Lourdes hit .224 with 16 kills, but it was Marian with the final two points to take the lead in the match.
The fourth set had 11 more ties, and was deadlocked at 23 before back-to-back errors by the Gray Wolves ended the match. Lourdes managed just 11 kills in the final frame, hitting .122.
