ARCADIA, Ohio (WTVG) - Samantha Watkins holds the Arcadia High School records in both the discus and the shot put.
Except she cannot escape her family's name around here. Samantha's brother Shea built the discus cage for his Eagle Scout project.
Shea now throws at the University of Notre Dame and was once too a 13abc Athlete of the Week. Samantha Watkins always has her mother Shannon's eyes because Shannon is Arcadia's throwing coach.
"Always been around shot put and discus," Samantha Watkins said. "Grew up with my mom coaching."
Samantha Watkins also coached her son Shea.
"I think it is harder with Samantha than it was with Shea," Shannon Watkins said. "I think it's that whole - two females, mother daughter relationship. She'll even come to me with things, 'Mom, I've got this going on, I've got this going on,' like as soon as practice starts. I'm like, 'Nope, nope. After five o'clock, I'm (the) coach right now, you're at practice.'
"It's hard but we figure it out. It's gotten easier."
Watkins was one spot away from making the state meet last season in the shot put. Odds are in her favor in the event this year thanks to a couple girls graduating from last season's field.
"Technique is everything," Samantha Watkins said. "If I don't have that I wouldn't be here. I have no weight - compared to most girls. And I'm short so my technique is everything.
Samantha also competes in Olympic lifting.
"She's explosive," Shannon Watkins said. "So she's got those fast twitch muscle fibers, so that's what helps her."
