Despite a career-high 36 points from Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) on Saturday afternoon, the Lourdes men’s basketball team came up just short and dropped a closely contested 97-95 battle to No. 6-ranked Cornerstone inside the Ebeid Recreation Center.

Today’s contest marked the fourth time this season Lourdes has played an overtime contest, which is a new program record.

Cornerstone scored two quick buckets to begin the contest and jump out to a 4-0 lead. After pushing their first half lead to 13-6, Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) nailed a three-pointer with 14:39 left in the first half to spark a 9-0 run and help Lourdes take its first lead of the game at 15-13 with 13:36 left in the opening period.

After three ties and two lead changes, Lourdes took control and pushed its lead to 36-29 with 4:27 left in the half following a three-pointer from Snow. The Gray Wolves continued to hold the lead throughout the remainder of the half and weathered a late Golden Eagle run to take a 44-43 lead into the intermission.

The trend would continue well into the second half, as the contest saw three lead changes and three ties just five minutes into the second half.

The biggest lead of the second half for either team came at the 8:50 mark after Lauf found Deuce Martin (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) for an open three to give Lourdes a 73-67 lead.

Christian Wagenhauser (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) proved to be a force late in regulation as he hit a crucial three-point field goal with 1:59 left in the second half to give Lourdes an 82-81 lead.

Cornerstone continued to hang with the Gray Wolves and eventually took a late 84-82 lead following a three-point field goal from Tyler Baker. Wagenhauser again came up huge in the waning seconds of regulation and grabbed an offensive board before hitting a layup with five seconds left to force overtime.

The overtime period followed suit and proved to be a closely contested battle as the two teams exchanged buckets. An emphatic dunk by McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights) with just 31 second remaining in the contest helped Lourdes pull even at 95-95.

The final two points of Sam Vander Sluis’s 45-point and 22-rebound effort for Cornerstone came with eight seconds left in the contest as he tipped in what would prove to be the game-winning basket and pushed the Golden Eagles to a 97-95 victory.

Snow added five rebounds and three assists to his career-high 36-point outburst, while Wagenhauser tallied a career-high 14 points. Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall) added 10 points and Martin (12 points), White (11 points), and Lauf (10 points) all scored in double-figures for Lourdes.

Lauf flirted with a triple-double, grabbing seven rebounds and handing out eight assists.

The Gray Wolf bench came up big in the contest, outscoring the opposing bench by a 26-12 margin.

Lourdes finished 34-of-69 (49.3%) from the field and 11-of-25 (44.0%) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles knocked down 32-of-72 (44.4%) shots and finished 10-of-25 from three-point range.

The Gray Wolves (15-8, 6-7 WHAC) return to action next Saturday at 3 p.m. when they meet Michigan-Dearborn on the road.
