It took just 17 games for the Lourdes men’s basketball team to eclipse last season’s win total as it picked up its 11th victory of the 2018-19 campaign with a 104-73 victory over Akron Wayne inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
“We’re happy to be able to end our non-conference schedule on a high note,” said head coach Josh Gibson following the victory. “I think we still showed a little bit of rust but Akron Wayne is a much-improved program and I think they will finish the season strong. Our focus now has to turn to the 13 games in front of us in the WHAC so we can try and put ourselves in a position to make the postseason.”
The Gray Wolves also ran their current win streak to five games after scoring 104 points for the second time this season.
“Obviously winning our 11th game was one of those things we wanted to do this year,” Gibson continued. “It’s nice to knock that off the list. A 9-1 record in non-conference play is something we are proud of and we were able to learn a lot from those games.”
Lourdes wasted no time taking control of the contest, opening the game on a 13-0 run. After scoring the contest’s first nine points, Lourdes forced Akron Wayne (5-7 overall) to call a timeout. The Gray Wolves countered the timeout by scoring four straight points following the break.
With the hosts holding on to a 19-4 lead, the Warriors scored seven straight to close the gap to 19-11 with 12:51 remaining in the first half.
Lourdes would slowly extend its lead as the half went on before a jumper from Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) sparked a late 10-0 run capped off by an old-fashioned three point play from Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) to give the Gray Wolves a 50-27 advantage with 1:51 in the half.
Snow caught fire early on in the second half, nailing three straight three-pointers to help Lourdes push its lead to 72-45 with 14:19 left in the contest.
The Gray Wolves biggest lead of the contest would come at the 2:16 mark of the second half as Eddie Murphy (Louisville, Ky./Russell County) found Caiden Smith (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) for an open three pointer in transition, pushing Lourdes past the 100-point plateau and giving the hosts a 102-68 lead.
Lourdes would go on to claim the 104-73 victory.
Snow was one rebound shy of a second consecutive double-double, netting 24 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall) poured in a game-high 25 points, while McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights) and Tyler Kegley (Mount Gilead, Ohio/Northmor) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Gray Wolves shot better than 50% from the field for the fourth straight game, going 42-of-81 (51.9%) from the floor. Lourdes also knocked down 11 three-point shots. Akron Wayne finished 27-of-66 (40.9%) from the field and hit five three-pointers.
Lourdes also controlled the glass, winning the rebounding battle by a 51-34 margin.
The Gray Wolves (11-6) return to action after the New Year and will travel to Lima on January 2 to take on UNOH at 7:30 p.m. in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup.
