2003 Masters champion and Canada native Mike Weir has been given a sponsor exemption to play in the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
“I immediately was excited when the Rocket Mortgage Classic was announced,” Weir said. “I grew up across the border and Detroit has meant a lot to me – it’s no secret my passion for the Red Wings. I can't wait to see some familiar faces and lots of Canadian support.”
Weir's first of eight total PGA TOUR wins came at the 1999 Air Canada Championship in Surrey, British Columbia. The victory made him the first Canadian to win a PGA TOUR event in Canada in 45 years.
Weir began his best professional year - 2003 - in impressive fashion, winning the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., and then the Nissan Open at Riviera Country Club near Los Angeles. That April he donned his first and only green jacket, winning the Masters in a playoff against Len Mattiace. He is the only Canadian male ever to win a professional major championship, and with his Masters win, became only the second left-handed golfer to win any of the four majors, the other being Bob Charles, who won the British Open forty years earlier.
The addition of Weir means there are now nine major championship winners in the field: Gary Woodland (2019 U.S. Open), Patrick Reed (2018 Masters), Dustin Johnson (2016 U.S. Open), Jimmy Walker (2016 PGA Championship), Bubba Watson (2014 Masters, 2012 Masters), Jason Dufner (2013 PGA Championship), Stewart Cink (2009 British Open), Ernie Els (1994 and 1997 U.S. Open, 2002 and 2012 British Open) and Weir (2003 Masters).
The Rocket Mortgage Classic will mark the first PGA TOUR ever held in the city of Detroit when it comes to Detroit Golf Club June 25-30. Tickets and more information are available at www.RocketMortgageClassic.com.
