Nate Cole, Kevin Beard Promoted to Assistant Football Positions

By  |

University of Toledo head football coach Jason Candle announced the promotion of two members of his staff today. Director of player personnel/assistant recruiting coordinator Kevin Beard will now coach the wide receivers and director of player development Nate Cole will coach the running backs.

Beard joined the Rocket staff in 2018 after serving in posts at Miami (Fla.), Georgia and Tennessee. He replaces Mike Bellamy, who accepted a post at Illinois after two seasons with UT.
Cole has deep roots with Rockets. He played at UT from 2006-10, served as a graduate assistant from 2011-13 and has been a full-time staffer since 2016. He fills the position vacated by Kerry Dixon, who left to become the wide receivers coach at Georgia Tech.

"We are very excited to move Kevin Beard and Nate Cole into their new roles as position coaches," Candle said. "Both men have the experience necessary to assume the responsibilities as a position coach. Kevin has previously coached wide receivers at some very strong programs, while Nate has been an important part of our program as a player or coach for the better part of a decade. I know they will be a great addition to our program as we strive to get better every day."

Toledo opens spring practice on March 13. The Rockets' annual spring scrimmage will be played on Friday, April 12.

Kevin Beard, Wide Receivers Coach

Kevin Beard joined the Rockets' coaching staff last year as the director of player personnel and assistant recruiting coordinator. He served as the wide receivers coach at the University of Tennessee in 2017.

Beard was a wide receiver at the University of Miami (Fla.) from 1999-2003, playing a key role on the Hurricanes' 2001 national championship team. He enjoyed a four-year professional career in the Arena Football League before embarking on a career in coaching.

Beard began his coaching career in the high school ranks, working with wide receivers as an assistant from 2010-13 at University High School in Davie, Fla. He returned to his alma mater in 2014, where he accepted a position as the assistant director of football operations. A year later, he was named the Hurricanes' wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. In 2016, Beard was hired by Georgia as the quality control coach for wide receivers before moving on to FIU to coach wide receivers. Shortly after joining FIU, he went on to become the wide receivers coach at the University of Tennessee.

Beard graduated from Miami in 2003 with a degree in liberal arts and a minor in sociology. He and his wife Nordea have three children, Kevin Jr., Justin and Moriah.
