There is lots of noise around the Anthony Wayne High School football team over the last two months. The Generals allowed just one touchdown in seven Northern Lakes League games.

But of all the noise with this year's team, senior Jacob Potkanowicz is one guy on the Generals not making much noise with his vocal chords.

"You don't think he's very vocally loud, but as soon as you close the door and he's in with somebody else, that's all you hear is him talking," Anthony Wayne head coach Andy Brungard said. "Or on the field, he uses his shoulder pads. He loves to come up and create contact with other people and you know to the point sometimes I've taken him out of games to check on him to make sure he's OK.

"He may be 165 pounds but he hits with every ounce he has."

In the final game of the regular season against Springfield - "Potty" as the team calls Jacob - he had a forced fumble with a recovery, an interception, six tackles and a pass break up.

"(I) practice everyday," Potkanowicz said. "Repping it multiple, multiple times. That's the main part for me."

The construction of more space on the Anthony Wayne campus is now complete and that includes a new weight room which is not far from the football practice field.

Assistant football coach Marcus Waugh leads the strength program for the team and Potkanowicz notices a difference.

(It) just allows you to make plays at a higher rate," Potkanowicz said. "Cause when you're in shape like we are now, it's easier to make plays."

Brungard is in his fourth season with Anthony Wayne as he started with the current senior class - Potkanowicz's group.

"Jacob is so consistent," Brungard said. "We sometimes put him at free safety or strong safety and before you can even try to teach him something throughout the week, he's already seeing it on film and knows the adjustment from his side. So, it's nice when you have the last line of defense be somebody who is so invested in what we are doing."
