Lourdes opened its 2019 season on Sunday in Clermont, Fla., falling 10-2 to Saint Ambrose and 10-1 to Warner at Legends Field.

“We took one on the chin today,” head coach Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. “It was our first day outside today and we will look to come back swinging tomorrow.”

The Gray Wolves started quickly against Saint Ambrose, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first. Three straight singles loaded the baseball before Tiana Card (Brook Park, Ohio/Brook Park H.S.) delivered a sacrifice fly for the first run of the season. Alexis Nowowiecki (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) followed with a single, putting Lourdes in front 2-0.

The Bees tied the game in the bottom of the first with two runs, before breaking the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the third, sending 13 batters to the plate. Seven of the eight tallies were unearned, as Saint Ambrose took advantage of a pair of Lourdes errors.

Lourdes loaded the bases in the top of the fifth before a double play ended the inning, and the game.

Kim Waters (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) and Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) each tallied two hits for the Gray Wolves in the opener, as Lourdes tallied eight total hits.

Jasmine Bowman went 3-for-4 with a home run for Saint Ambrose (9-3), as the Bees finished with nine hits.

Jane Thomas earned the win (4-1) in the circle, striking out six without walking a hitter. She allowed the two runs on six hits. Card suffered the loss (0-1), giving up 10 runs, only four of which were earned, in 2.1 innings of work.

In game two, Warner jumped in front first, plating two runs in the first, a single run in the second, and three more in the top of the third to build a 6-0 lead.

Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) singled home Shylee Schmeltz (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) with two outs in the bottom of the frame, as Lourdes took advantage of a Royals error.

Warner responded with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Lourdes managed just four hits off of Tatiana Rodriguez, who allowed just the one unearned run while striking out two to pick up the win (2-1). She did not walk anyone.

Ashley Riley (Oak Harbor, Ohio/Oak Harbor H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), yielding seven runs, five of which were earned, and seven hits, while walking five in five innings.

Lourdes (0-2) returns to Legends Way on Monday for two more contests. The Gray Wolves face Saint Francis (Ind.) at 9 a.m. and sixth-ranked Marian at 11:15 a.m.
