Toledo freshmen divers Joelle Gallais and Sydney Jackson wrapped up day two of the University at Buffalo Diving Invitational earlier this afternoon. The two competed in the 3-meter event, and Gallais advanced to the finals where she took third overall.
"Going into today, Joelle seemed more relaxed, and her hurdles and starts were more consistent and controlled," diving coach Gabby Agostino said. "I was happy with her performance."
Both Gallais and Jackson had strong starts to the day in the morning preliminaries. Gallais tied for fourth with Buffalo's Tricia Arceri after both divers totaled 245.30 scores through six dives. Jackson, who is competing in the first 3-meter event of her collegiate career, had an impressive outing, finishing in 13th with a score of 212.50.
"Sydney did well for her first competition," Agostino said. "She was consistent throughout the meet, we just have to work on improving her degree of difficulty before the conference championship."
Finals saw Gallais beat out two upperclassmen on her way to the podium before getting stumped by Buffalo's Jae Sarkis and Journi Northorp. The Lumsden, Saskatchewan native ended the day in third place with a score of 255.75 after six dives, landing behind Sarkis (267.05) and Northorp (257.55).
The Rockets have one more day of action in the Bison City. While Jackson is done for the weekend, Gallais is scheduled to compete in the platform event. Day three prelims kick off at 11 a.m. with finals following immediately after.
