WVB: Lourdes Notes at UNOH/vs. UM-Dearborn/vs. Concordia

Upcoming in Gray Wolves Volleyball: The midway point of the season arrives this week for Lourdes as the Gray Wolves complete the first round of league play and begin round two. Lourdes looks to extend its seven-match winning streak as the Gray Wolves head to Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday evening to complete the first half of round robin play before hosting Michigan-Dearborn on Friday and Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday.

Head Coach Greg Reitz: In his ninth season on the Lourdes bench, Greg Reitz has a 180-109 (.623) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In his 10th season overall as a women’s head coach, Reitz has a 198-144 (.579) career mark. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program’s history and was named WHAC Coach of the Year in 2015.

Series Notes: Northwestern Ohio leads the all-time series with Lourdes 8-5 dating back to Oct. 2, 2010. The Gray Wolves have won the last five meetings between the two schools though, including a 3-1 victory inside the Ebeid Rec Center in 2017. The Racers hold a 3-2 series edge in games played in Lima, Ohio. Lourdes holds an 11-2 series advantage against Michigan-Dearborn dating back to Aug. 28, 2010. The Gray Wolves won the first meeting this season 3-1 on Sept. 14 in Dearborn, Mich. Lourdes won the only previous meeting inside the Ebeid Rec Center during the 2016 season. The Gray Wolves are 14-1 all-time against Concordia (Mich.) and have won 11 straight contests in a series that began Aug. 20, 2010. Lourdes won the first meeting this season in straight sets on Sept. 15 in Ann Arbor, Mich., and is 2-0 all-time against the Cardinals in the Ebeid Rec Center.

Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes hit a blistering .325 on Wednesday evening on the way to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-8 victory on the road at Rochester (Mich.). Tylar Roberson tallied 15 kills while Carol Goncalves had 38 assists and 19 digs. The Gray Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Cornerstone at home on Friday before needing to go the distance in a 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 18-25, 15-5 victory. Roberson had 18 kills and 11 digs while hitting .326 and Niki Polce tallied 29 digs. Goncalves had 37 assists and 16 digs in the win. Lourdes ran its winning streak to seven on Saturday afternoon with a 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 victory over Aquinas at home. Roberson had 10 kills while Goncalves dished out 28 assists and added 21 digs in the sweep.

Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers stopped a two-match losing skid on Saturday afternoon with a straight sets victory at Rochester (Mich.). Devon Heitkamp leads UNOH hitting .269 with 272 kills while Kayleigh Hulst has handed out 679 assists. Flavia Knutti leads the Racers with 33 service aces. Defensively, Knutti leads the way with 284 digs while Taylor Winner has registered 38 blocks.

Scouting Michigan-Dearborn: The Wolverines snapped an 11-match losing skid on Friday evening with a five-set triumph over Concordia (Mich.) at home. Gina Giacomini leads UM-Dearborn with 135 kills and is hitting .148 while Daniella Barile has handed out 305 assists. Barile and Erin Parrinello share the team lead with 25 service aces. Defensively, Caitlyn Carlson leads the Wolverines with 324 digs while Katherine Nealy has registered 50 digs.

Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals enter the week having dropped 11 straight contests after a three-set loss at Madonna on Saturday. Concordia hosts Cornerstone on Wednesday and visits Lawrence Tech on Friday prior to the trip to Lourdes. Gabrielle den Boer leads the Cardinal offense with 91 kills while Kylie Frank has handed out 169 assists. Denae Tolu has recorded 12 aces. Defensively, Janie Bunge has a team-high 213 digs while Madelyn Kragt has recorded 33 blocks.

Sweeping WHAC Honors: Carol Goncalves was named both the WHAC Setter of the Week and the Defender of the Week while Tylar Roberson earned Attacker of the Week honors for their roles in last week’s three victories. Goncalves averaged 9.36 assists per set and 5.09 digs per set. Roberson tallied 3.91 kills per, 2.27 digs per set, and hit .235 on the week.

Reitz Nearing 200: Head coach Greg Reitz needs just two victories to reach 200 for his career. Reitz is in his 10th season overall as a women’s head coach, and ninth at Lourdes.

Among the Nation’s Leaders: As a team, Lourdes ranks ninth in the NAIA averaging 18.83 digs per set. The Gray Wolves are also 10th in assists per set, tallying 12.24, led by Carol Goncalves, who is 22th nationally as an individual handing out 9.91 helpers per stanza. Lourdes is also 24th in the country hitting .225 while the 13.00 kills per set are 28th best in the NAIA.

In the Record Books: Lourdes has several players who rank among the top-10 all-time in program history in various statistical categories. Angelica Dippold is second all-time with 1,139 career digs and is sixth all-time with 262 sets played. Emily Arnold is currently second in school history with a .277 career hitting percentage and is tied for second with 194 total blocks. Jami Markus is fifth with 849 career assists while Carol Goncalves is eighth with 456 assists. Sarah Wisser is ninth in the same category with 278 helpers.

This and That: Carol Goncalves has recorded nine double-doubles this year ... Lourdes is 27-2 all-time inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center and won 10 straight home matches ... Tylar Roberson ranks third in the WHAC averaging 3.50 kills per set.
