MANSFIELD (13abc, Action News) - Two waves of Ohio Air National Guard troops have been deployed in the U.S.-led fight against the Islamic State group.
Roughly 100 members of the 179th Airlift Wing left Mansfield for the Middle East on Thursday and Saturday. They're joining the Alaska Air National Guard in Operation Inherent Resolve.
The primary mission of the Ohio unit, consisting mostly of aircraft mechanics, will be assisting in transferring equipment, supplies and personnel throughout the region.
Lt. Col. Patricia Barr said "once they get there it's one team, one fight." They deployment is for about four months.
President Barack Obama has declined to put regular U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq and Syria, but the administration has been involved for several months in a bombing campaign designed to stop the terror group.
