Public invited to blessing of Ohio’s 13th Safe Haven Baby Box in Springfield Twp.

HOLLAND, Ohio (WTVG) - Springfield Township is welcoming Ohio’s 13th Safe Haven Baby Box and the public is invited to a baby box blessing event on Friday.
The event will take place on May 3 at 11 a.m. at 802 S. McCord Road in Holland and will feature the following speakers:
- Monica Kelsey, Safe Haven Baby Boxes Founder
- Shelbie Flegal, Firefighter/Paramedic
- Jonathon Ziehr, Acting Fire Chief
- Steve Miller, Pastor, Maumee Valley Church
Pastor Miller will give the blessing and remarks before Kelsey unlocks the new baby box.
According to organizers, Safe Haven Baby Boxes is the only organization that allows for anonymous surrender of a baby. In the U.S., there are 225 Safe Haven Baby Box locations, specifically 13 in Ohio, which includes the newest box in Springfield Township.
“Springfield Township Fire and Rescue is pleased to offer this local resource in an option desert for those in need, as the nearest Safe Haven Baby Box is 50 miles west,” said Ziehr.
Organizers say since 2017, 43 infants have been safely and legally surrendered in a baby box. Each year that number increases as more baby boxes become available across the country.
“We have seen time and time again that preparation can save and change lives,” said Kelsey. “We never know when or where we will be needed, so having options for mothers in crisis is crucial. I am grateful for local advocates who take our mission to their community.”
