Local longtime teacher resigns amid allegations into relationship with student
DEFIANCE, Ohio (WTVG) - A local high school teacher has resigned from his position after the district opened an investigation into allegations of possible misconduct.
According to the Superintendent of Defiance City Schools, Robert Morton, a concerned parent came to the high school on Friday to talk to school officials about a teacher. The district opened an investigation and the longtime teacher submitted his resignation, citing personal reasons. He was escorted out of the building.
Superintendent Morton would not disclose the nature of the allegations against the teacher, but did say school officials reported it to police. Defiance Police say they’re investigating a possible inappropriate relationship with a student, but officials are still looking into it. 13 Action News is not naming the teacher at this time as he has not been charged with a crime. Detectives say they’re in the early stages of the investigation.
A statement from Morton said the district prioritizes student safety and well being, and that the district took immediate action to investigate the allegations.
The law says the age of consent is 16-years-old. It also says that if a teacher and student are in the same school, despite the age of the student, teachers could face criminal charges.
