Metroparks Meetup: Birds on display at Windows on Wildlife
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - While the fall color has mostly come and gone, Metroparks Toledo said there are still plenty of sights to see this winter.
The park system has an attraction that puts parkgoers up close with some of the wildlife, specifically birds, that stay in the area during the winter.
It’s called Windows on Wildlife and most of the parks have it.
Karen Menard, the research and monitoring supervisor with Metroparks Toledo, said winter is a great time to come out to the parks and check for bird life.
Menard said some feathered friends you can expect to see include Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals, and the Hairy Woodpecker.
There are six Windows on Wildlife throughout the parks. It’s a heated room, where guests can come in, sit, and watch the colorful birds up close.
“I just enjoy looking at the diversity of bird life, that you could potentially see when you’re sitting here,” Menard said. “There always seems to be a surprise. Sometimes it’s good to look just past the trees in the background, and see what you might see.”
Menard said birds that hang around the Glass City over the cold months, are looking for a good source of food. Different from the summer, these birds are looking for seeds and berries.
Windows on Wildlife is at Wildwood Preserve, Pearson, Swan Creek Preserve, Side Cut, Oak Openings Preserve, and Secor.
These rooms are handicap accessible and heated. Happy watching!
