Location debated for East Toledo healthcare clinic
Planning commission meeting scheduled for Thursday
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A new health clinic is being proposed for Toledo’s east side. But, at least one group is disapproving of where it’s planned.
We’re not hearing pushback on having a health clinic in general but the exact spot is getting some extra scrutiny.
Many on Toledo’s east side will remember this site on Navarre Avenue near Woodville as the former East Side Central Elementary School. The Toledo-Lucas County Planning Commission now has a proposal in front of it for this site to become a health clinic run by Health Partners of Western Ohio.
“Toledo needs them because ever since the pandemic everyone needs them,” said East Toledo resident Austin Nye.
While he believes the need is there, Nye sees people using this spot for recreation right now.
“People take their dogs and let them run in the summertime. Sometimes kids will come over here and play football,” said Nye.
The clinic may not happen as the planning commission staff is recommending disapproval. It would require a zoning change. Right now the spot is residential and the hope is to change it to mixed commercial-residential.
The staff report said becoming a commercial location would impact the character of the neighborhood and said it is the duty of the plan commission to consider the positive and detrimental effects that a zone change can cause on properties in proximity of the site.
“I think it would be alright. Nothing else is gonna be here,” said East Toledo resident Russell Barnes.
The plan commission said in its report there was a neighborhood meeting was held in January and no one from the public attended.
That zoning change will be discussed at a meeting Thursday with the planning commission. It’s expected to go for a full vote in front of Toledo City Council in March.
This staff recommendation is just that, a recommendation. We’ll see Thursday what the planning commission says and ultimately the City Council vote is the one that will be the final “yes or no.”
