At least 35 cars vandalized in Defiance over the weekend
Police ask residents to check security cameras for footage
DEFIANCE, Ohio (WTVG) - At least 35 car windows in Defiance were smashed overnight Saturday, prompting a flood of 911 calls and a search for suspects.
Police say at least 35 car windows were smashed and they are hoping residents will check their cameras and turn in any video.
One caller reported a shattered back window on a 2017 GMC Terrain. Another caller said their back windshield was shattered and they heard their dog barking at 3 a.m., but security cameras did not capture anyone.
Defiance Police Chief Frank Herbert said his officers have no leads.
“We started checking the neighborhoods for cameras and seeing if anyone had any footage, nothing came of those canvasses,” Herbert said.
Police say the damage appears random and is spread across a large stretch of the city. No one has been hurt.
“No, it doesn’t look like anyone’s been targeted individually. It looks like sporadic and spread out over a good portion of the center of the city,” Herbert said.
The chief said while the damage is unsettling, there is no reason for residents to panic, but they should stay alert.
“It’s all property crime, which isn’t good, but nobody’s been injured or anything like that. So definitely be vigilant. If you see someone in the area, recognize it looks suspicious, call us, come check it out,” Herbert said.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Defiance Police Department.
