FedEx driver shoots gun on the job in Port Clinton: Police
PORT CLINTON, Ohio (WTVG) - One Port Clinton couple was in disbelief after a FedEx driver fired a gun outside their home, while he was on the job.
On a typical work day, CJ Perry sits on her front porch, working from home.
But Wednesday morning was anything but a typical work day for Perry. She had just gone inside her home after a work meeting when she heard what she thought were two gunshots.
Looking out her window, she saw a FedEx delivery driver outside her neighbor’s house, taking a picture of his delivery.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first.
“Oh well if he’s not flustered, clearly there’s nothing wrong,” Perry thought to herself, “So I went back about my work day.”
But Perry’s ears did not deceive her. After her roommate asked her what was going on, she realized she had in fact heard gunfire.
“I looked out the window and there were a bunch of cops standing outside the neighbor’s house,” Perry said.
Port Clinton Police were interviewing the FedEx driver, who admitted to firing his gun on the job because he was afraid for his life.
According to police, the driver said he was delivering packages when a neighbor’s dogs, two German Shepherds, ran out of the house towards him.
The FedEx driver fired at one of the dogs, and they both ran back inside. Police said no one was hurt, including the dogs.
Officers found two shell casings in their investigation. CJ and her husband Devon Perry believe one of the bullets ricocheted off the sidewalk and hit their truck, leaving a circular mark/
The Perrys said they were frustrated but glad that their truck was the only thing hit.
“You know, it could’ve hit the house, it could’ve hit my wife, it could’ve hit anyone really and the irresponsibility of that FedEx driver,” Devon said.
Police said the driver was carrying two magazines and a Glock 23 on his waist. The driver was released from the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
Officers who wrote the police report noted they gave the case information to the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s office. As of Monday afternoon, the prosecutors said they had not received the information, possibly because the case was ongoing. No charges have been filed.
13 Action News reached out to FedEx, and a representative said:
“Safety is our highest priority, and we have fully cooperated with law enforcement in its investigation. The individual involved is no longer providing service on behalf of FedEx.”
The Perrys told 13 Action News FedEx has agreed to pay for the damage to their truck.
