FOSTORIA, Ohio (WTVG) - Dramatic video shows a high-speed chase through a cornfield as Fostoria police tried to stop a man driving a stolen car.

The officer tried to stop the car around 6 p.m. on Oct. 5.

“When he seen a car that he had dealt with prior in the week, he knew the license was expired but come to find out, during this incident, that the car came back stolen,” said Fostoria Police Chief Gabe Wedge.

The driver took off and wouldn’t stop. The chase went through a neighborhood in Fostoria and as the man tried to get away, he drove through yards and a cornfield.

“They turned from a residential neighborhood a couple of those streets down there on that end to the northeast end of town and turned into a cornfield, which is still standing. They drove through that for a short distance through the corn before they came out into the back of the trailer park between the trailers and the lot that was there,” said Chief Wedge. “The driver took the vehicle and went down into a very deep ditch. He bailed and eventually, you see the female passenger bails out too.”

The driver got away but police said the female passenger, Shelby Ann Dieterle, told police she didn’t know the man. She was arrested and taken to the Wood County Jail.

Chief Wedge said the driver, Matthew Aldrich, 43, was arrested in Seneca County on unrelated charges. The chief said once the investigation is wrapped up, the department will file charges.
