Several Toledo post office mailboxes closed off in effort to combat postal crime
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Several Toledo mailboxes have been covered up in an effort to combat postal crime, officials said.
The mailboxes outside the post office in the 6000 block of Bancroft have been closed off “in an abundance of caution” as part of Project Safe Delivery, the regional Postal Inspector told 13 Action News on Friday.
It’s all in an effort to limit criminal access to the mail stream and counter crime and protect USPS employees, the postal inspector said. These particular mailboxes were covered because they have not yet been upgraded to high-security blue collection boxes with electronic lock mechanisms.
The Bancroft Street Post Office has been at the center of multiple problems over the last year. We reported on a forgery investigation linked to those blue mailboxes and missing Christmas cards back in January. The I-TEAM also reported on a man accused of robbing a postal worker in Oregon, who allegedly told investigators he was stealing mail and money from the Bancroft Street post office.
