TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Health officials confirmed the first Lucas County flu-related death of the 2024-2025 influenza season, the health department reported Thursday.

A statement from a spokesperson said the death underscores the seriousness of the flu and importance of preventative measures. The health department recommends that anyone six months and older get a flu vaccine, stay home if you’re experiencing symptoms, and practice good hygiene.

The Toledo Lucas County Health Department (TLCHD) is one of the places offering flu vaccines and can do so for walk-ins.

Health experts said flu activity increases this time of year, and last season there were four flu-related deaths in Lucas County.

Health Commissioner Karim Baroudi said the hearts of those at the health department go out to the friends and family affected by the loss.

“While flu activity in Lucas County is currently below our five-year average, this death is a reminder that the flu can be a severe illness, especially for those at higher risk, such as older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and people with underlying health conditions,” Baroudi sad in part. “Even though our community’s flu numbers are below the five-year baseline, we can’t become complacent. Flu is unpredictable, and it’s up to all of us to take steps to protect ourselves and those around us.”
