TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The death of retired Sylvania firefighter Jeffrey Young is being classified as a line of duty death after the 30+ year veteran died from cancer on Christmas Day.

“With the worst fire of my career, where I found myself potentially trapped in a basement after an explosion, and Jeff was the first one at the door,” said Asst. Fire Chief Jeffrey Bennett. “It goes to show the kind of guy Jeff was.”

Young was 61 years old, a father of three and born in Toledo. Firefighters at the visitation Sunday described Young as a leader, mentor, dear friend an someone who would always be willing to help.

One of his sons, Dillon, followed in his footsteps, working at the department.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Rosary Cathedral, with a procession following the service to Toledo Memorial Park.
