Toledo man says some street lights have been out for months, poses a safety concern
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Multiple street lights are out near an apartment building that houses veterans, making for some dangerous conditions for residents at night.
Kevin Collins is one of those residents. He said he reached out to 13 Action News after getting the runaround from Toledo Edison.
“It’s dangerous for us veterans who are in wheelchairs,” Collins said.
The street lights line part of Garden Lake Parkway and Billie Johnson Way.
Collins lives at ‘The Commons at Garden Lake’, a place where many of the veterans use mobility devices like motorized chairs and wheelchairs, in the street and on the sidewalk.
With the lights being out, Collins said its hard to commute at night.
“It’s very dark, and when you’ve got cars ... and someone in the street in a wheelchair, it’s dangerous,” Collins said.
Collins said he thinks the lights have been out for about five months. He adds he and his neighbors have contacted Toledo Edison several times, but nothing has been repaired.
“That’s why I reached out to you guys to see if you can help and get us some answers,” Collins said.
13 Action News reached out to First Energy and got this response from a spokesperson:
“At Toledo Edison, the safety and well-being of our customers are top priorities. We understand that streetlights are essential to our communities to support safety and security.
We are aware of an issue with a portion of an underground line that feeds the lights near the Commons at Garden Lake. Repair work is scheduled to take place there this weekend. The line runs under the road, which makes the repair a little more complicated.”

“We just want the lights on, plain and simple,” Collins said.
