Problem Solver: Toledo residents want their street repaired
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Some Toledo residents want to know when it’ll be their streets’ turn to be repaired.
Those residents live on Glenton Drive off Glendale and it’s a stretch that resident Toni Foltz said is riddled with bumps and potholes.
“Our street looks like it’s been bombed,” Foltz said.
Another resident, Nick Syperski, said he’s been reaching out to the City of Toledo for years about the issue.
“It’s a slap in the face and I’m tired of it,” Syperski said.
The cherry on top of this bumpy sundae? Construction is underway on intersecting Wilmore Drive, bit it’s forcing heavy construction vehicles up and down Glenton.
“I’ve been complaining for years and you come in and slap our face and fix this road that nobody even uses,” Syperski said. “You’re taking heavy equipment up and down our street tearing it up.”
Syperski said debris from the project is also being kicked up into his yard.
Both Syperski and Johnson add their cars have been damaged by the street in the past. A spokesperson for the city said construction traffic will continue to flow on Glenton until at least the end of July, that’s when the work on intersecting Wilmore is expected to finish.
“If they’re doing Wilmore, they need to do Glenton too,” Foltz said. “It doesn’t make any sense any other way.”
“Our street is horrible and it’s a main road for the kids, to the elementary school, why not fix our street?” said Robert Johnson, another resident.
A city spokesperson released the following statement:
“When the city annexed the township, it was written into the City Charter that we weren’t allowed to fix the “unimproved” streets. We amended it in November 2023.
We have the list of unimproved streets, and Glenton is on our radar. As of right now, we know it isn’t on there this year and it isn’t on the list next year. There are several factors that go into deciding which roads make our list each year. One of those factors is the data from complaints to Engage Toledo."
The spokesperson added that the city has received complaints about Glenton in the past. However, the city’s most realistic timeframe for a Glenton reconstruction is potentially in three years.
“I’m just frustrated that they can’t do our street,” Syperski said.
