TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A former assisted living facility employee has been convicted of using a blind, elderly woman’s debit card to buy thousands of dollars worth of items for herself over the course of nearly a year, court filings show.

Tiesha Hunt, 46, of Toledo, pleaded no contest in court on Dec. 2, court records show. Police said she stole from an 81-year-old woman who is legally blind.

She pleaded no contest to a theft charge, which was amended from a theft by deception charge. Judge Khoury sentenced Hunt to serve 180 days at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio with 150 days suspended and 30 days of electronic monitoring. Hunt was also placed on active probation for a year.

According to a police report from August, an administrator at Alpine House of Toledo called law enforcement about a theft of over $665 on the woman’s debit card by an employee there. The victim said she realized money had been taken when she went to her bank to get money out but had only $5 in her account.

She said she previously asked Hunt to help her with an order from Walmart, according to the report.

An officer obtained a copy of the receipt and found sales of items including laundry detergent, steaks and beef that the victim said she never ordered.

The victim said she is vegan, and the purchases of the meat led officials to believe that Hunt had bought things for both the victim and herself using the victim’s card.

Police records allege thefts had been going on since Sept. 2024.

An affidavit says Hunt had stolen a total of $2,607.88 from the victim.

“We take such matters very seriously. As soon as we came to know of the stealing, we terminated employment and the employee was reported to law enforcement,” said Tosha Sanders, facility manager at Alpine House of Toledo. “We are committed to the safety and well-being of all our residents. We are cooperating with law enforcement authorities to ensure that proper action is taken.”
