BELLEVILLE, Mich. (WTVG) - The spring tulip season is here and it’s a quick one.

DeBuck’s Family Farm is in Belleville, Michigan. This is its third year holding a tulip festival.

This year, they planted 1.2 million tulip bulbs, including all kinds of colors. The only color that does not exist is blue. Blue is botanically impossible.

Each bulb was shipped from the Netherlands, and they were planted back in November. The type of tulip determines when they bloom. Earlies will bloom in late March to early April. Mids will bloom during April and then lates will bloom in late April into early May.

“It’s fun to grow these. We get to see, as farmers, things that the customers don’t. When we are setting up, you come out one day and these guys will just be barely buds. Then you come out the next day and then those guys over there are blooming. Every day you get to see these guys grow. It is kind of neat. It’s really pretty,” says Eric DeBuck, who is the co-owner of DeBuck’s Family Farm.

The tulip festival includes 20 different activities for kids, a wagon ride, live music and an option to pick tulips for an additional charge. Every year, they create a new pattern of tulips to walk through and enjoy.

“That one is a hummingbird on that side. This one on this side is a bee. The later varieties, over there are a tulip,” says DeBuck.

Tulips only last about three weeks in Southeastern Michigan and Northwest Ohio. They rely heavily on our weather conditions. If it is too hot, that can cause them to lose their petals or if it’s too wet, that could cause them to rot.

So before we move into the next thing, this is your reminder to take a pause. Spring doesn’t stick around and neither do the tulips, so take a second, breathe it in, and enjoy it while it’s here.
