Toledo Police releasing investigation findings from two controversial police stops involving teenagers
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The Toledo Police Department is releasing the findings from internal investigations into two separate controversial police interactions with teens on Friday.
Chief of Police Mike Troendle, Assistant Chief Kevin Braun and Toledo Buffalo Soldiers President Earl Mack will hold a news conference Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
13 Action News will stream it live. You can watch it on this story, on 13+ or anywhere you stream 13 Action News.
The news conference will focus on two separate high-profile incidents involving Toledo Police officers and teenagers that sparked widespread criticism of the officers’ behavior.
The first investigation stems from an incident in which officers stopped a group of teens for jaywalking. Camera footage captured the moment an officer shoved a 15-year-old girl to the ground during her arrest when she refused to give an officer her name. Officers said the teen also spat on the arresting officer during the incident.
Another internal investigation was opened after an incident between officers and teens that the mayor said made him sick to his stomach. The language officers used drew widespread criticism from community members and city leaders alike.
One of the officers told the group they were stopped for giving them “criminal indications” and cursed at the teens multiple times. As the officers left, one officer yelled “enjoy poverty” to the kids.
“The language heard in the video is difficult to listen to and does not reflect how this department expects officers to communicate with the public, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the encounter,” Troendle previously said in a statement.
This story will be updated with the full news conference once available.
