TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Maumee firefighters are suiting up to step into a new chapter.

“This week on Monday we started our new shift rotation which is a 24 hour on, 48 hour off A, B, C shift rotation,” Fire Chief Brandon Loboschefski said.

The department has hired 6 full time firefighters/paramedics to have around the clock coverage. They are now able to staff a fire engine and medic unit.

Chief Loboschefski said these hires are a direct result of Maumee’s 5.6 mill levy that passed in November, 2023.

For several decades the department has maintained a full-time EMS team but relied solely on part-time and volunteer firefighters. However, the department found that this staffing wasn’t enough.

Chief Loboschefski said the amount of calls have increased substantially over the years and the number of volunteers went down.

It’s a problem that has plagued fire departments nationwide, leaving many to turn to hiring full-time staff.

Maumee Fire officials say they’re excited to see what the future holds as their staffing grows and the department strengthens.
